Five Great Things About Your Late Twenties

Happy Friday! I've been doing a lot of birthday celebrating this week and definitely overindulged a little. I have been of keeping up with my workouts though, including a kind of crappy but beautiful 3 mile run.

Since it's Friday, I'm joining the Friday Five Linkup with Eat Pray Run DCMar on the Run and You Signed Up for What?!. This week is a free Friday so I had to think of a theme all by myself. Serious #firstworldproblems yo.

Even though I had a good birthday, I'm not super thrilled about getting a year closer to 30. But at the same time, living with four 22 year olds (who I absolutely love!) definitely makes me appreciate being over that phase. So here's five things that are really great about being in your late twenties.

1. You are a lot less subject to peer pressure

Putting on heels that hurt your feet because everyone else is? Staying out later than you want just so you won't be the lame one? That's so early twenties. By the time you reach your late twenties you care way less about what people think about you. And that lack of peer pressure leaves you with a lot more time to watch all the Netflix you want and get to bed early.

2. You can afford to buy yourself nice(r) things

Unless you are lucky/chose a much more lucrative career than nonprofit work, you probably aren't rolling in dough. But, price is hopefully not the only factor determining the food you eat, alcohol you drink (no more box wine! unless it's good box wine), or the furniture you own.

3. You know who your real friends are

By the time you get to your late twenties you've had plenty of time to weed out all the fake friends and frenemies. Your Facebook friend list may be shorter, but you waste way less time and energy on people who make you feel bad.

4. You know how to take care of yourself

After over 25 years of living in your body, you have a much better idea how to take care of it. This means you're much less likely to be hungover, starving from the latest fad diet, or running on way too little sleep. All of those things may still happen, but they'll probably happen less now that you know how much they're going to hurt.

5. You are old enough to complain about young people

Because you're too old to try to figure out how to keep one of those flower headbands on without putting a giant dent in your forehead or why in the world anyone would want to bring "90s fit" jeans back.

Q: What is/was/will be your favorite part of your late twenties?

  1. Great post! Totally agree with everything you listed. In addition, I really enjoyed the independence, which many may experience before they reach their late twenties but I think you don't fully appreciate the freedom and responsibility that comes with it until older. I am really lucky in that although I'm still in school I get a regular stipend that covers all my necessary expenses and leaving some for pleasure, that I am able to live by myself when I don't wish to have roommate, and that although I don't get anything free from my parents anymore, I still get their full support knowing that they will be there for me if I'm in trouble. Sometimes it's hard and I wish that I don't have to deal with the details in my life, but I accept that as the responsibility that comes with the freedom.

    1. Yes freedom and independence are definitely awesome--even though dealing with adult problems sucks sometimes. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. OMG YES to all of these!!! laughing so hard at the Pooh gif! My favorite thing is definitely the "not caring what other people think" thing. Life is so much better that way!

  3. I identified with each one of these so much! Totally submit it to Buzzfeed. Though, many in their late 20s with children may not identify with it as much. It is ALSO my birthday this month, ALSO late 20s.

I've found that another perk is that for you, age differences become so muchless important, even though all the 18 to early-20-year-olds actually still look up to you, ask for advice, and feel the age gap a lot more keenly than you. You feel like your peer group has widened to include the young'uns (and the decade above you).

Also, to tangent off of your #2, you actually feel perpared for an adult future, and have some semblance of financial stability. You WANT to be a homeowner and a parent, instead of feeling totally unprepared and too young for that sort of thing.

    1. Thanks! Glad you liked it. Definitely agree about wanting adult responsibilities, although homeownership and babies are still kind of scary :)

  4. Totally agree especially about complaining about young people. It's so funny how when you're young you just don't get it!

  8. DINK - best part of late 20s LOL (double income, no kids). I'd love to go back to my late 20s self and remind myself to really appreciate that times. I love where I am now, but I used to think I was busy back then. Ha!

  9. TRUTH! I'm about to turn 27 and I live in employee housing right now with a bunch of younger people. Oh my god I am so glad I'm over that! In fact I'm skipping going to the bar right now for staying in and reading blogs. I have a 10:00 bed time so that I can function at work and I don't care how lame that makes me! But yeah I'll go out on my days off :)

  11. Hilarious and true! I would say the late twenties and my 2 years into the 30s have been my favorite so far (for the reasons you listed). #2 reminded me of a rooftop BBQ I attended last year. She had a yummy BBQ spread and bottled craft beer. Her neighbors, prob straight out of college, had pizza and Natty Bohs. The juxtaposition was pretty funny, she said "I am glad I am not 20 anymore"
