Surpahs Digital Body Fat Scale Review

Oh man who watched the US game yesterday? So heartbreaking! Really sad we lost but we put up a good fight. Plus Tim Howard was freaking amazing!

Oh well. At least I have another great Workout Wednesday (WOW) linkup to look forward to :)

For today's linkup, I'm reviewing this Surpahs Digital Body Fat Scale

Disclosure: I was provided this product free of charge for review. I was not compensated for my time. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In addition to measuring body weight, the scale also estimates your body fat, total body water percentage, muscle mass, and bone mass using Bio Impedance Analysis. Basically it passes a tiny electrical current through the body and measuring how long it takes to get through. Pretty cool! And, even cooler, the scale stores info for up to 8 people.

The scale was pretty attractive when I pulled it out of the box. I really liked the shiny glass and clean lines, and the fact that it came all ready to go with batteries and an instruction manual. To use the Bio Impedance Analysis functions, you have to set up a profile with your height, weight, age, and gender. Setting up the profile was pretty quick and painless, and you only have to do it once. I haven't weighed myself since I moved to California, so after entering all my info I was excited/terrified to step on.

Hmm so I've gained about 15 pounds since moving here 6 months ago. Whomp whomp. Probably a good thing I got this scale! At least this self-esteem blow was eased a little bit by the fact that my BMI, body fat, and water, muscle, and bone mass were all normal. I set up a profile for my shorter, smaller, housemate, and after her first weigh-in the scale automatically recognized which of us was on it. Neat!

Pros

Design: Since most scales are out in your bathroom all the time, it's nice to have a good looking one.
Price: This scale is only about $40 on Amazon, which is right up my alley.
Ease of use: It was super easy to set up and I like that you only had to enter your data once.
Accuracy: I very scientifically weighed some of my 5 and 10 pound dumbbells to test this, and the scale was right on.

Cons

Ease of interpreting results: The only thing I wish the scale included was more easy to interpret results. It was cool to see my body fat and muscle mass percentage, but I had no idea if they were normal or not. There are handy charts in the instruction booklet, but it would be cool if there were a visual representation of being in the normal range or not, like there is for BMI.

Bottom Line:

This is a good looking and very reasonably priced scale. I am not a huge fan of scales, since I can sometimes get obsessed about moving that weight number, but I really like that having the body impedance analysis measures gives me other numbers to focus on. Plus, I'm a huge nerd so I love having more data. If you're in the market for a new scale, I highly recommend this one!

  1. That scale is really awesome. I don't own a scale but I have been on my husband about getting one so he can track his weight loss. This sounds perfect!

  2. That scale is super cool!!! Measuring weight is just one small factor of determining overall health. Incorporating body fat, bone and muscle mass are great additions. The price point isn't bad either. #wowlinkup

    1. Yea I'm not going to lie...I kind of liked being scale-less for the last 6 months. But, my waistline didn't, so it's probably a good thing I got one lol.

  5. I stopped weighing myself last year and all of that info would probably freak me out. It is cool for a great price if you are looking for more indicators of fitness.

    1. I feel you. I stopped weighing myself for awhile too but it hasn't worked that well for me. Guess I need more data to motivate me!

  7. Yesss... Tim Howard! That is so cool that the scale stores up to 8 people! I just bought one from Amazon, but it does not have the BMI, or body fat % (I went for "cheap and reliable" based on the reviews).

  8. Thanks for this review! I tried out a Surpah's scale a while back-it was pretty cool, but didn't have any of these extras. I'm a personal trainer and find these scales often aren't that accurate when it comes to BF% so for those of you who didn't splurge-don't feel to bad ;) Visiting from #wowlinkup :)

    1. Glad it was useful to you Catherine! This scale is pretty cheap, so even if it is precise but not accurate it's worth it to me since I can see if the numbers are going in the right direction! Thanks for stopping by!

  9. I had a similar scale but I did not think the body fat number was accurate. I had the caliper test done before so I guess I was partial to that number. I found myself obsessing over yet another number so I got rid of it. I still have a regular scale. I think it's good to check your body fat but I don't think it would be good for me to see that number everyday. I know myself too well ;-)
