Why Volleyball Is My Favorite Sport

It's Wednesday and (hopefully) you know what that means: time for another Workout Wednesday (WOW) linkup!

Today's theme is: "What's Your Favorite Sport?" If you know me at all, you probably know the answer to that question: volleyball! I've talked about what playing NCAA volleyball taught me, and definitely mention my current volleyball activities a lot on the blog. But I don't think I've really talked about why I love the sport so much. So for today's post, I'm sharing three reasons volleyball is my favorite sport.

1. You can play it in all seasons and on all surfaces

Indoor volleyball was my first love, but I've also played on grass, sand, and even concrete. It's awesome that you can really play the sport year round. I appreciate being an indoor athlete in the fall and winterwhen I watch football players struggle through rain, snow, and all kind of horrible weather. And I love being able to play at the beach in the summer and work on my tan. It's really a win win.

2. You can play it your whole life

I'm no spring chicken anymore, but I still enjoy playing volleyball at a pretty high level and hope to do so as long as possible. The age range of people I play with varies a lot, and some of the older players are sneaky good and make up for athleticism with experience and smarts. My mom still plays and we actually got to play together in a few tournaments and rec leagues when I was young. There's even a women's 65 and over division at the USA Volleyball National Championships and they had 8 teams competing last year! How's that for longevity?

3. It's the ultimate team sport

Volleyball is pretty unique in that no player can touch the ball twice in a row, which makes it the ultimate team sport. Even a really standout star player wouldn't be able to win without teammates to (sometimes literally) set them up for success. I love that about the sport, and love the tight, lifelong bonds I've formed with my teammates as a result. I seriously don't think I'd have any friends if it weren't for volleyball!

  2. I have always liked volleyball - except that I am short (5'1") so there is only so much I can do. But it is fun. I also love soccer (played it in high school). Right now I focus mostly on running though #wowlinkup

    1. I'm pretty short for volleyball too, which is annoying but I do kind of like being the underdog and overcoming adversity. I like watching soccer but I'm terrible with my feet and the field is so big! So much running! lol

  4. Hi Amanda,
I love your #wowlinkup post on your favorite sport, volleyball. I had the pleasure of playing volleyball in Junior High and High School and we also played it in my neighborhood park. Unfortunately I have not played it in years but it is a great workout and a fun activity to share.

  7. I always get super excited when I learn about coworkers who love volleyball. The social aspect of the game is what I think keeps people coming back for more!

  8. Ok I never played volleyball and I feel like I'm at a huge disadvantage. I grew up playing soccer and have zero hand-eye coordination, but everywhere I go people whip out a volleyball and I am so terrible! If I ever have kids they will grow up playing volleyball so they can be more social hahah

  9. I loved playing soccer, because of the team aspect of it. Unfortunately, I don't play anymore, but it's still my absolute favorite. I actually never thought of volleyball as a sport with longevity, but how cool that they have a 65+ league to join! Wonder if I could start playing when I'm that age;)

  10. Hi Amanda! I don't really actually play any sports but I enjoy a variety of workouts - like kickboxing, step aerobics and yoga - also Hiit workouts. I have never played volleyball on an actual team but have played in family settings and it is a lot of fun. One time several years ago I played so much with my kids and nieces and nephews my wrist and inner arm hurt. That is great that you still play.

  11. I'm always a little jealous of people who are having fun playing volleyball on the beach :) I love fitness in general but if I had to go with a "sport" I'd say tennis. I haven't played in ages, but when I did I really liked it! #wowlinkup

  13. To maintain a healthy and fit life you should play game. Volleyball is the interesting indoor games that play on the grass, on the beach. This game makes us both physically and mentally active or playing volleyball increases the energy level. As these games are played as a team so it increases the social interaction. We can say volleyball game is the exercise of hand and eye so it increases the coordination of hand and eye. Playing a volleyball will motivate us how to success in your life and the teamwork will teaches the value of hard work.
